Paladin
The Light does not ask permission before it smites the wicked.
The Paladin is one of Hearthstone's nine original playable classes, represented by Uther the Lightbringer, the venerable leader of the Silver Hand. Where other classes channel elemental fury, shadow, or arcane trickery, the Paladin draws upon the Light itself—a radiant, selfless force that mends wounds, fortifies allies, and strikes down the wicked with righteous hammer-blow. In the game, this translates into a toolkit built around buffing friendly minions, healing the hero, and summoning a steady stream of loyal Silver Hand recruits.
Thematically, the Paladin occupies the role of the protector and the standard-bearer. It is the class that stands between the vulnerable and the threat, that turns a small goblin into a towering champion, and that refuses to let its allies fall. For players, it offers a satisfying loop of investment: you pour resources into your board, and the board pays you back in overwhelming, gleaming force.

Lore & Background
In the broad sweep of Azeroth's history, the Silver Hand rose as an order of warriors who swore their swords and their souls to the Light. Uther the Lightbringer, a figure of legendary conviction, led them through the darkest hours of the First War and the upheavals that followed, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the most desperate defenders of the realm. His hammer was as much a symbol of mercy as of judgment: he would raise a fallen ally before he would strike a living enemy, and the Light answered both impulses in equal measure.
In Hearthstone, this legacy is distilled into a class identity that is immediately recognizable. The Paladin's cards speak a language of protection—Divine Shield, Blessing of Protection, Blessing of Sacrifice—interleaved with bursts of holy wrath in the form of Consecration, Hammer of Wrath, and Word of Glory. The hero power, Reinforce, evokes the image of a paladin calling fresh recruits from the ranks of the Silver Hand, each one small but willing, each one a thread in a larger tapestry of defense. The class does not seek to outpace its opponents through speed or raw aggression; it seeks to outlast them, to build a wall of buffed, shielded, ever-growing allies that simply cannot be broken.
There is a quiet moral weight to the Paladin that sets it apart. Where a Rogue whispers and a Warlock bargains, the Paladin stands in the open, armor gleaming, and says plainly: I will not let you hurt them. That declaration, repeated card after card, gives the class a narrative coherence that fans consistently cite as a reason for its enduring popularity.
In Their Own Story
The bridge over the Ashenvale crossing had been holding for three days. On the fourth morning, the orcs came in a wave that swallowed the treeline, and the two goblin scouts at the far end of the span looked very small, very green, and very likely to die before the sun cleared the canopy.
Uther did not run. He walked, which was worse, because running implied urgency and walking implied certainty. His hammer, Truesilver, caught the first grey light and threw it back in a long white arc. He raised one hand—not in a spell, not yet—and the air above the goblins thickened, shimmered, and settled onto their shoulders like a second skin. They straightened. They stopped trembling. They picked up their spears again.
"Hold the line," he said, to them, to the empty air, to the Light itself. Then he brought the hammer down, and the bridge rang like a bell, and the orcs heard it, and for one breath the whole crossing knew that something had arrived that was not going to leave.
The goblins held. The Light held. And Uther, bleeding from a cut above his eye that he would not bother to tend, simply kept walking forward.
Reader's Guide
Hero Power – Reinforce: Summon a 1/1 Silver Hand Recruit. It is the quiet heartbeat of the class, a way to fill empty board slots, apply pressure on turn one, and set up combo interactions without spending a card from hand.
Identity hook: You are Uther. You do not hide, you do not scheme, you do not bargain. You stand, you shield, you buff, and when the moment demands it, you hit like a falling cathedral. The Light is patient, but it is not passive.
Archetypes: (1) Big Game / Buff – funnel Blessing of Kings, Seal of Light, and Seal of Righteousness into one or two massive minions until the board is simply too big to answer. (2) Tempo – lean on efficient Silver Hand minions, Reinforce, and light removal (Hammer of Justice, Consecration) to stay ahead of the curve. (3) Midrange / Value – a balanced mix of Divine Favor for card advantage, Lay on Hands for survivability, and mid-cost threats that scale with Blessings.
Key signature cards: Consecration, Hammer of Wrath, Blessing of Kings, Blessing of Wisdom, Lay on Hands, Divine Favor, Truesilver Champion, Silver Hand Regent, Argent Commander, Hammer of Justice, Word of Glory, Divine Hymn.
Feel: Playing Paladin is like conducting a small orchestra where every instrument is a friendly minion and your Blessings are the dynamics markings. You are not the loudest voice, but you are the one holding the tempo. When the board clicks and three Blessings land on the right targets, the satisfaction is warm, golden, and deeply personal—like watching a story you wrote yourself finally reach its climax.
Did You Know?
- Uther the Lightbringer was already a major, named character in World of Warcraft's lore long before he was chosen as Hearthstone's Paladin hero.
- Paladin was one of the original nine classes available at Hearthstone's 2014 launch, making it part of the game's founding identity.
- The 'Blessing' card type—granting stats or effects to a single friendly minion—is exclusive to the Paladin class; no other class has access to that specific mechanic.
- The hero power name 'Reinforce' and the 1/1 Silver Hand Recruit it summons are a direct nod to the Silver Hand's tradition as a military order of paladins in Warcraft lore.
